Coming soon to brighterkind

Carlton Mansions is one of a number of select residential care homes currently being transferred into the brighterkind care family.

Under this new direction, residents at Carlton Mansions will benefit from the highest standard of holistic care.  To find out more about their philosophy and approach go to the brighterkind website.

Join us for our Open Day on the 19th June! To find out more, visit our page on the National Care Home Open Day website, or download an invitation.

You'll find Carlton Mansions in a residential suburb of Bristol. Here our team of dedicated carers, all with NVQ2 or NVQ3, provides high quality care around the clock. We offer residential care, palliative care, respite care, and care for people with dementia.

Our large Victorian property is close to the Downs and Bristol zoo, with shops and amenities nearby. We have a beautiful, peaceful, courtyard garden with water features and year-round planting. Squirrels play in the trees, and people living here love to spot and feed the birds. Inside, we have beautifully furnished lounges, and a large dining area where residents enjoy meals accompanied by soft background music. Our sunny conservatory is the perfect place for catching up with visitors. Individual bedrooms are comfortable and well maintained. They have en-suites, TVs, telephone points and great safety features. We love residents to personalise these spaces with their own furniture and colour schemes.

Life at Carlton Mansions

Our activities coordinator finds out the life history of each person living here, then plans a stimulating programme to match. This usually involves promoting that individual's existing interests, and encouraging them to take part in group goings-on, too. Options include painting, chair aerobics, breathing exercises, quizzes, resident poetry readings, trips out to places like Cheddar or Bristol Zoo, picnics at Chew Valley Lakes, visits to garden centres, and trips to stately homes.

There's also a quarterly newsletter for residents to read. We have a calendar of seasonal events, and most years the Lord Mayor of Bristol visits. A professional entertainer comes by, and residents also enjoy the visiting cinema which screens classic movies.

At least two evenings a week residents can have a wine or sherry. Catering at Carlton Mansions is high quality. Our chefs are trained to provide nutritionally balanced menus, and residents get a choice of three-course meals in the lounge or dining room. Each morning, breakfast is freshly cooked on request.

Our Care

  • dementia care

We offer a person-centred care programme that focuses heavily on each person being an individual and their care is provided on that basis. We take a proactive approach to what our residents can still do, not on what they can’t, to enhance their lives and allow them to live as full a life as possible.

Our dementia care is first rate: we provide the most up-to-date training for our carers, and support for our residents.

    Focusing on strengths

For those living with dementia, communicating their needs and wishes can be difficult, which in turn can lead to isolation. Our dementia care programme focuses on an individual’s strengths to help find ways in which they can re-engage with their families, friends and the community.

brighterkind dementia care has been developed by specialists, and is constantly updated to reflect findings from the latest research. We gain an insight into residents’ life stories through recollections, reminiscence and sensory-based activities and community involvement, and provide the beneficial therapies and treatments. Our homes and dementia units have also been specially designed to help make life as easy as possible.

We have one-to-one activities engaging residents with life story books and memory boxes as well as pastimes, music and films which they remember as a link to their past.

Staff who worked largely or exclusively with residents experiencing dementia are selected on the basis of their enthusiasm and positive approach. They are individuals who can brighten the dullest of days and make us all feel special. In many of our homes they work alongside specialist nurses, who regularly review the latest research to introduce the most innovative thinking into our programme, for the benefit of our residents and their families.

Fees and Funding

How are fees charged?

How much you pay will depend on the care home, the length of your stay, the level of care you require, the size and location of your room and any chargeable extras you decide to pay for. If you require financial assistance, your local authority will decide what level of care you require and look at your income and savings to determine whether you will need to make a contribution towards the cost. This will vary slightly according to where you live in the UK. You can read more about fees and funding on the brighterkind care website.
