On 10th March we celebrated our resident Mike’s birthday at brighterkind’s Ivybank House Care Home and he received a delicious surprise when Shona from our local ‘Bake a Smile Project’ arrived to present him with a fabulous birthday cake.
The Bake a Smile Project was started by Sarah Byfield in 2018. A keen baker, she had been reading about loneliness amongst the older generations and decided to put her skills to good use to bring a smile to someone on their birthday. The idea snowballed and the project now has a team of volunteer bakers who create the most fantastic cakes and deliver them to the elderly on their special day.
Mike was over the moon with his surprise and said “I’ve had a super birthday which started with a trip to see Bath Rugby beat the Saracens with my son and now this wonderful surprise! Shona baked what I will say was a perfect cake. A massive thank you to her and the Bake a Smile team.”
Sue, Magic Moments Club Coordinator at Ivybank House said “To see what a huge impact these bakers have on someone’s day is truly amazing. We would all like to say a huge thank you to all those who are involved with this special project. Everyone deserves to feel special on their birthday, and everyone deserves a birthday cake.”
