Residents at brighterkind are taking part in their own Winter Olympic Games while supporting Team GB in their quest for medals in Beijing.
In the lead-up to the games, residents will create flags and banners in their arts and crafts activities to decorate the home. Many homes are initiating an Olympic torch relay within their own community or with other brighterkind care homes. Reminiscence sessions are being held to trigger memories from previous Olympics with favourite moments being Torvill and Dean winning gold for their legendary Boléro ice dance in 1984 and Eddie the Eagle winning hearts for his ski jumping in 1988, despite finishing last.
To inspire them to go for gold themselves, residents will watch the opening ceremony together on the big screen while sipping hot chocolate or enjoying a snowball cocktail. The Magic Moments Coordinators at each home are devising a series of activities designed for residents of all abilities to take part in, including table top curling, Nordic walking, snowball bowling, cross-country quizzing and armchair ice dancing! Residents are also participating in a range of non sports related activities to explore China and Chinese culture during the games. This includes a scheduled stop in Beijing with our own live tour of Beijing.
The Winter Olympics season will culminate with our own closing ceremony towards the end of February.
Our Winter Olympics programme for residents is all part of our Magic Moments Club. At brighterkind we believe in living life to the full. That’s why we’re passionate about creating vibrant, stimulating activities that will help our residents to love every day. We call them: ‘Magic Moments’.
