On 18th October, The Granby Care Home in Harrogate enjoyed “All The Fun Of The Circus!” as their Wow Factor event – which celebrates all of the talents of residents and team members.
Residents, family and friends had fun trying circus tricks including juggling, plate spinning, diablos and hula-hooping. A star of the day was resident Margaret Lunn who walked the floor based “Tight Rope” with style, balanced by a sparkly umbrella! Her husband Bill (also a resident) and family were so proud watching Margaret achieve such an amazing feat requiring enormous skill!
The “Balloon Alley”, which was thought of by our Maintenance Team member Richard, was extremely popular. We drew a bit of a crowd as residents Olive and Sylvia had a competition to see who could pop the most balloons. Sylvia was the winner and her prize was her favourite sweet of choice, wine gums!
Leading up to the day of the event, the Magic Moments Team had run craft workshops with residents having all sorts of fun; decorating their walking frames and wheelchairs, making fancy circus party hats and goody bags containing sweets and a red nose! A huge part of the day was our “Pink Lady” Susie, who made balloon animals and hats on demand for our residents which they loved and very eagerly posed for photographs in.
All members of The Granby team were involved in the day with a huge “shout out” of thanks going to the Care Team who supported the Activities Team in ensuring all residents who wanted to attend the event came. The Housekeeping Team joined in all the fun at the event and hoovered up all the streamers, popcorn and busted balloons the next day!
‘All The Fun Of The Circus’ was a marvellous day, the activities leading up to it as well as the skills on the day were a wonderful way of encouraging people to try something new and have fun whilst doing so. The skills were all easily adapted to include everyone and make everyone smile - which they did!
Resident Pat Petrie said, “I would like to thank everyone for yesterday’s wonderful Circus Party. What a lot of trouble you have gone to. It is much appreciated by all of us. The costumes were great!”

Every brighterkind home now has a Magic Moments Club which provides a vast range of activities and fun things to do that are open to all of our residents. The idea behind Magic Moments is that just because someone moves into a care home doesn't mean that the things they love doing should suddenly stop – quite the contrary, we believe our residents should have the opportunity to love every day, by doing the things that they have always loved as well as trying new things along the way.
