The residents at St Oswald’s House Care Home really enjoyed planting some wildflower seeds ready to give to our community as at thank you along with our cupcake day event.
Normally every year we join in with National Care Home Open Day and open our home to the community and this gives us an opportunity to thank them but this year that could happen so the plans changed. We planned our day to coincided with Alzheimer’s cupcake day. To say thank you to our community we potted some wildflower seeds and gave them out to our community as a big THANK YOU for everything they have done for us. Our thank you banner was also proudly displayed at the front of our home for the community to see as they passed our home.
Our community were invited to enter a cake into our cake competition, where our residents would be the judges. Alzheimer’s cupcake day is one close to a lot of our residents so they were excited for the twist we had put on the day. Everyone was very excited for it!
We took a couple of our residents to reception where they could see me outside welcoming all our wonderful community bakers when they were making their cake entries for the competition. Anyone who donated a cake got given a pot of wildflower seeds as a thank you for their continued support. When our first cake arrived, by Chris, he was really so happy to receive our seeds.
We received loads of entries so decided to put them into categories to judge them. We had large cakes, loaves, chocolate cake and cupcake and scones. Our residents proudly wore their judge badges and the event began. Each table of two socially distanced residents and team members were each given a list of the cakes they were judging. They were to choose and tick their favourite. I continued around the home with our residents who prefer to stay in their rooms. All the entries were judged and we had three winners. Ria, our home manager, put them in order of first, second and third. Our winners were contacted and invited to come along and collect their prize.
This was such a successful day and enjoyed by all! The seeds and certificates were gratefully received along with our thanks to our community members.
Resident, Margaret, said “I’m so glad I’ve been chosen to judge the cake competition!”
