We're walking tall with dementia

Avery Mews Care Home, West Yorkshire-Enjoying our walk in the countryside for Dementia Action Week

“It was lovely to be outdoors with our residents seeing them really enjoying the simple things in life; good company and fresh air.”

Residents, their families and team members at Avery Mews Care Home have been ‘Walking Tall with Dementia’ to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Action Week.

We wanted to help combat the stigma attached to dementia by showing that people living with the condition can still experience happiness and enjoy themselves, hence the name of the event 'Walking Tall with Dementia' which was arranged by our Magic Moments Club team.

Our large group set off from our home on foot and in wheelchairs and travelled along the Spen Valley Greenway admiring the beautiful countryside and wildlife surrounding us.

When we reached Cleckheaton, our halfway point, we stopped to enjoy drinks and ice creams in the sunshine and rested our weary legs – and wheels - for a while before continuing on our journey.

We met many friendly dogs and their owners out for walks and enjoyed stopping for a chat and explaining what our group walk was all about.

We walked tall with dementia - with pride.

Resident Marie said “It’s been wonderful to be out in the countryside today. We have lots of outings but this has to be the most enjoyable one for me.”

Team member Georgie said “It was lovely to be outdoors with our residents seeing them really enjoying the simple things in life; good company and fresh air.”

At Avery Mews we believe in living life to the full. That’s why we’re passionate about creating vibrant, stimulating activities that will help our residents to love every day. We call them ‘Magic Moments’.

Every brighterkind home now has a Magic Moments Club which provides a vast range of activities and fun things to do that are open to all of our residents. The idea behind Magic Moments is that just because someone moves into a care home doesn't mean that the things they love doing should suddenly stop – quite the contrary, we believe our residents should have the opportunity to love every day, by doing the things that they have always loved as well as trying new things along the way.

Avery Mews Care Home is located in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, and provides dementia carepalliative careresidential care and respite care.
