“It was my first time seeing a snake so close. It felt funny holding it but it was a great experience.”
Residents at Hungerford Care Home have celebrated National Pet Month by welcoming some rather exotic creatures to join them for a morning of animal therapy.
Wild Science held an animal workshop at our home and we met Beryl the snake, Bella the gecko, Sam the guinea pig and Blue the rabbit.
As well as finding out where the animals originate from and what they like to eat we were able to hold them and stroke them – even the snake – a first time experience for some of us!
Magic Moments Club Coordinator Sarah said, “Our residents absolutely loved meeting the animals. We couldn’t believe how eager they were to handle the creatures, especially the gecko and the snake. Animal therapy sessions have proven to benefit the elderly by reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety; it was lovely to see everyone with huge smiles on their faces during and after the visit and they are still talking about it now.”
Resident Doris said “It was my first time seeing a snake so close. It felt funny holding it but it was a great experience.”
At Hungerford Care Home we believe in living life to the full. That’s why we’re passionate about creating vibrant, stimulating activities that will help our residents to love every day. We call them ‘Magic Moments’.
Every brighterkind home now has a Magic Moments Club which provides a vast range of activities and fun things to do that are open to all of our residents. The idea behind Magic Moments is that just because someone moves into a care home doesn't mean that the things they love doing should suddenly stop – quite the contrary, we believe our residents should have the opportunity to love every day, by doing the things that they have always loved as well as trying new things along the way.
Hungerford Care Home is located in Hungerford Newtown, Berkshire, and provides dementia care, nursing care, palliative care and respite care.
