Don's fishing wishing well at Ivybank House Care Home

Don with his first catch of the day

Ivybank Care Home in collaboration with the charity Alive Activities has made a fishing Wishing Well wish come true for their resident Don Francis.

Don was recently chatting to Activities Coordinator Sue James about how he used to enjoy fishing, a hobby he started when he was a young lad and continued to enjoy for many years. Sue asked Don if he would like to make one of our ‘Wishing Well’ wishes to go fishing once again. Serendipitously, the making pals scheme from Alive Activities had found that many residents from various care homes across Bath also had the same wish as Don and had consequently organised multiple fishing trips over the summer.

On 29th June, with the help of Alive Activities Don, Sue and Care Assistant Jane Swift set off with a picnic basket and the all-important fishing rod to Bitterwell Lake near Bristol for a day of fishing fun! The lake is just over two acres in size and is a favourite with both competitive match and pleasure anglers due to its population of bream, perch, roach, crucians and carp.

Don was soon settled on his fishing platform and cast off in the hope of a good bite. The sun was shining and the temperature was warm – a perfect day for a spot of fishing.

Sue said ‘It was just lovely to see the smile on Don’s face and a pleasure to watch him do something he has always enjoyed so much again. It wasn’t long before he caught a fish and we managed to capture the moment on camera. On the way home we stopped at the local pub for a celebratory drink and chatted about the size of ‘the one that got away!”

Don said “I didn’t think for a minute that at the age of 94 I would ever sit on a fishing bank and watch the fish bite, it was wonderful.”

brighterkind runs their Wishing Well programme in all of its 70 care homes. Right from the beginning we aim to find out about our residents' life stories and get to know the things they would really like to do or what they have done in the past and would love to do again. People are helped to experience their chosen activities or events or to visit places they have long wanted to go.

Ivybank House Care Home is located in Bath, Somerset and provides residential care and respite care.
